Sketchbook - Shells

I was having problems trying to think of shapes to use when designing underwater buildings. So I thought that doing some sketches of shells might help, a little. Maybe it didn't help too much, but it was kinda fun.

Not having a beach nearby, I instead went to the library and picked up The Book of Shells, and drew the ones I that caught my eye.

Side Projects 03 - One Curious Nightfall Intro

I started this project the second semester of my freshman year at Digipen. It is an ambient "short interactive story" in the form of a platforming game.

Controls are described in-game.

Features
-Smooth 2D/3D hybrid animation
-Detailed 720p pixel graphics, with 28 unique rooms to explore
-Music by Flashygoodness (composer behind indie game hit Tower of Heaven)

Tip: If you you don't know where to go while in a castle, try jumping around.

Side Projects 02 - Old Short Film Storyboard

Here is the "final" storyboard for comparison. It has lots of issues, but I've learned from them, and am using that knowledge in upcoming projects.

I was using a Japanese storyboard template, and my own numbering convention. I only numbered the first frame of a sequence, and have since then been using the more standard 2a, 2b, 2c... Live and learn.

Side Projects 01 - Old Short Film Concept Sketches

Over the summer of 2011, I was actively trying to come up with an idea for a story to animate. After dozens of lousy storyboards and ideas, I settled on this one, which I also later abandoned. There were tons of issues with the story, most of which would require a complete overhaul. I did not think it was worth it, and went on to work on better things.

I made over 1000 concept sketches for the project. Below are a few select samples.

First are some quick composition and environmental studies:

Next up are some face/pose sketches. I would draw as many versions of the expression/pose as I could until I found the one I wanted. For comparison, I included the corresponding "final" storyboard panel.
